Labeling blood and other samples at the time they are collected improves patient safety and helps prevent a host of problems related to misidentification. It’s estimated that each year 169,000 adverse events result from sample identification errors.
A strong and growing body of evidence within medical literature supports the idea that creating specimen-identification labels on demand at the patient’s bedside can reduce errors. In addition, one of The Joint Commission’s national patient safety goals for 2008 states that health-care staff members use two patient specific identifiers when taking blood or other samples from a patient and label the specimen collection container in the presence of the patient.
This pre-recorded session will explain the processes involved in point-of-care specimen labeling, summarize their benefits, and outline technical requirements for bar coding at the bedside. In this session, the speaker will review several case studies based on real-world implementations, and explore the challenges and lessons learned from each.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
- Develop an effective point-of-care strategy for sample labeling and tracking.
- Understand how automated specimen collection differs from a manual workflow.
- Recognize the best practices for labeling barcodes during bedside-specimen collection.
Session Fees: Member: $290 Non-Member: $400
